BRISTOL, Tenn. — Austin Herink threw for three touchdown passes and 269 yards to lead East Tennessee State past Western Carolina 34-31 on Saturday afternoon.

Herink was 24 for 37 and completed passes to 10 different receivers for ETSU (2-0, 1-0 Southern).

Western Carolina (1-2, 0-1) grabbed an 18-point lead when Detrez Newsome ran 12 yards to score followed by the 2-point conversion to make it 21-3.

The Buccaneers cut the lead to 21-10 before the break when Herink completed a 2-yared touchdown pass to Vincent Lowe capping an eight-play, 71-yard drive in just over a minute.

In the third, Herink connected on 12-yard score to Keith Coffee, and a 2-yarder to Matt Thompson to give ETSU its first lead of the game at 24-21.

Tyrie Adams was 26 for 39 for 343 yards and two touchdowns for the Catamounts. He connected with Newsome on a 45-yard score with 13 seconds left.

The Buccaneers recovered the onside kick.
