ATLANTA — A backpack filled with clothes and left in a trashcan caused the evacuation of a federal building in downtown Atlanta.

Deputy U.S. Marshal Gretchen Fortin said a security officer at the Richard B. Russell Federal Building and Courthouse noticed a backpack in a trashcan outside an employee entrance during a patrol around 9:30 a.m. Monday.

Atlanta police brought a bomb robot to help investigate. Fortin said the backpack and a tote bag that was underneath it were removed from the trashcan by the robot and were X-rayed before they were opened.

Fortin said both bags contained clothing.

People were evacuated from the building and surrounding streets were blocked off for about two hours.
