Owls top Cubs

MADISON

Seymour earned a win in the consolation round of the Hoosier Hills Conference Tournament by defeating Madison 4-1 on Wednesday.

The Owls (7-7) swept the singles spots to secure a matchup in the consolation finals at Bedford North Lawrence on Friday.

Against the Cubs, Alex Berry defeated Zach Burnett 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1 singles.

At No. 2 singles Ty McCory earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Christian Brown while Adam Berry beat Jakob Jones 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3.

In the No. 1 doubles spot, Seymour seniors Grant Handloser and Johnny Rennkamp claimed a 6-2, 6-2 win against Ceaton Bowman and Cooper Yancey.

The Owls No. 2 doubles duo of Jonathan Valasquez and Sam Schmidt fell just short in a 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 loss to Jeremy Huff and Clay Vaughn.

Seymour falls short

Seymour nearly came all the way back from a 2-0 deficit Tuesday night at Class 3A No. 5 Silver Creek, but the hosts pulled-out a 29-27, 25-21, 22-25, 22-25, 15-13 win.

As a team, the Owls went 168-for-195 with 57 kills on the attack and 100 of 111 behind five aces serving.

Seymour’s Addie Rudge pounded 43 hits with 18 kills and Lauren Fleetwood had 45 with nine.

The Owls’ Hannah Sipe made 26 of 28 serves and Emily Corcoran made 20 on 24 tries.

Today, Seymour (14-11) will host New Albany.
