PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The building that houses the Rhode Island Department of Health is open again, after being evacuated when an employee received mail that contained an unidentified liquid.

Department spokesman Joseph Wendelken says they evacuated the building near the Statehouse out of an abundance of caution at around 10:30 a.m. Thursday. The building was reopened early Thursday afternoon.

He says the employee alerted a supervisor after opening the mail, which had a bag with an unknown substance. The leadership of the department then called state police, who called in the Providence Fire Department’s hazardous materials team. The North Providence Fire Department also responded.

Around 350 people work in the facility.
