PHOENIX — A 67-year-old Goodyear man accused of fatally stabbing his wife and son in 2013 has pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder.
Eugene Maraventano was arraigned Friday in Maricopa County Superior Court. He faces a Nov. 8 initial pretrial conference.
Maraventano allegedly killed his 63-year-old wife and 27-year-old son with a 14-inch kitchen knife in April 2013.
He told investigators he feared he gave his wife HIV through prostitutes he used to frequent and was worried about what his jobless son would make of his life.
A court twice determined Maraventano was not competent to stand trial and ordered him to undergo treatment.
Last year, a plea agreement for Maraventano fell apart after he refused to sign off on the deal that called for a 25-year prison term.
