Carolyn “Jo” Besser, 80, of Huron passed away peacefully Thursday evening, Sept. 22, 2016, at IU Health Bloomington Hospital, surrounded by her family.

Born Oct. 18, 1935, in Madison County, she was the daughter of James Lloyd “Mike” and Ruth VanBlair Harrison, both of whom preceded her in death. She married Joe Daniel Besser on June 17, 1956, and they recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

Jo had been employed at Guide Lamp, Cummins Engine Co. and Monroe County School Corp. She graduated from Frankton High School in 1953 and attended business college. She was a member of Huron Baptist Church and had served as pianist since 1983. She served as state treasurer of the American Baptist Women Association and secretary and past president of the American Baptist Women Association of Kentucky and Indiana. Jo was instrumental in establishing Meals on Wheels in Seymour. She was very active in her church, family, community and was a member of Huron WTK Club.

Besides her husband, others survivors include her children, Gregory Scott (Becky) Besser of Indianapolis, Jill Anne (Fran) Vile of Boonville and Melissa Ruth (Greg) Reutter of Seymour; grandchildren, Liza (Ryan) Besser-Jones, Sarah (Peter) Besser-Reynolds, Alyssa Besser, Morgan Besser, Cameron (Emily) Vile, Caleb (Savannah) Vile, Emily (Jacob) McGill, Katelyn (Andy) Kalus and Mitchell Reutter; six great-grandchildren;  and a sister, Charlotte Anne Hosier (Bob) Ross of Indianapolis.

The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Huron Baptist Church with William Mathews officiating. Burial will be in Huron Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Mitchell and from 9:30 a.m. until the service on Tuesday at the church.

Memorials may be given to Huron Baptist Church. “… whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that overcomes the world, our faith.” (1 John 5:4)
