A family-owned chain of farm and home supplies announced Wednesday that its store on the east side of Seymour is closing.

The closing of the Orscheln Farm and Home store at 1501 E. Tipton St. was announced by the Moberly, Missouri-based company, which operates about 160 stores across the Midwest.

“It is never an easy decision to close a store after so many years,” Orscheln regional manager Lou Rivard said in a news release issued Wednesday.

A sale to clear the store of its inventory began Wednesday and will continue until everything is gone, according to a news release from the company. An official closing date was not released.

No details about the number of employees affected by the closure were announced, and company officials could not be reached for comment.

Rivard said the company’s North Vernon store remains open. The company also has stores in Bedford, Scottsburg, Madison and Charlestown.

Orscheln, which has been serving the Midwest for more than 55 years, is owned by Gordon Brothers, a global advisory, restructuring and investment firm specializing in the retail, consumer products, industrial and real estate sectors. That company was founded in 1903.
