NEWARK, N.J. — Two people are dead following a shooting by Newark police.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office says one person is in custody.
It happened around 6:30 a.m. Friday on North 7th Street.
None of the officers was injured.
James Stewart Jr., president of the Newark Fraternal Order of Police, tells NJ.com six officers involved in the shooting were being evaluated at a hospital.
Stewart says the officers were attempting to arrest three people suspected of being involved in multiple robberies around the city when the shooting occurred. Stewarts says the suspects “were not interested in surrendering.” He says the officers “responded to the threat and Newark is a safer place today because of them.”
