BIG SPRING, Texas — Police say a West Texas man has been charged in the death of his ex-girlfriend’s mother after the victim allegedly tried to protect her daughter during an argument.

Howard County jail records show 28-year-old Abel Torres of Big Spring was being held Friday on a murder charge, with bond set at $500,000.

Big Spring police say 64-year-old Irma Lozano was critically injured on Wednesday and died Thursday night at a Lubbock hospital.

Police say Lozano was found unconscious after allegedly being shoved to the ground during the family dispute. Torres initially was charged with aggravated assault, but police announced the charge with upgraded to murder following the woman’s death.

Online jail records do not list an attorney to speak on behalf of Torres.
