METAIRIE, La. — Brothers from Alabama won a brick-laying contest in a New Orleans suburb and will represent the region at a national contest in Las Vegas in January.
The New Orleans Advocate (http://bit.ly/2dIa7cK ) reports that Vince and Clint Wright of Wright Masonry in Alabama were judged to have the biggest, straightest wall Friday.
They mortared 577 bricks, but only 502 counted. Judges at the SpecMix Bricklayer 500 in Metairie (MET-uh-ree) decided 75 were not laid precisely enough. That was the fewest deductions in any wall, so the Wrights also won the “most sellable” award.
Contest spokesman Larry Theobold says it aims to bring attention to the trade and have fun.
The two-person teams get 80 minutes to build a wall. One lays the bricks; the other provides the materials and advice.
