INDIANAPOLIS — U.S. Rep. Andre Carson says he and his wife, Mariama, have separated and are getting divorced.
The four-term Indianapolis congressman released a statement Wednesday saying the split “is a very amicable and truly mutual decision. It is unfortunate for both of us but we continue to have the utmost respect for each other.”
The statement provided no reasons for the estrangement.
Carson is seeking a fifth term representing central Indiana in Congress. It’s the seat that his grandmother, the late Julia Carson, held for 11 years before her 2007 death.
Mariama Carson’s profile on the LinkedIn social network says she’s the founder and principal of Global Preparatory Academy, a K-8 charter school. She’s the daughter of Marion Superior Court Judge David Shaheed.
The Carsons have a 10-year-old daughter, Salimah.
