SEOUL, South Korea — Son Heung-min can’t seem to do anything wrong.
Son came to South Korea’s rescue in Asian qualifying for the World Cup when he scored the winner against Qatar on Thursday.
The South Koreans looked set to lose for the first time in 11 qualifying matches when they trailed Qatar 2-1 at halftime. Then Ji Dong-won equalized in the 56th minute, and two minutes later Son separated from his marker and curled his shot in.
He celebrated with a dab, to more cheers from the home crowd in Suwon. It was his sixth goal in seven appearances for South Korea and Tottenham this season.
“The important thing is to win and we did that,” Son said. “After Qatar scored, we regrouped, kept our focus and came back.”
Son missed South Korea’s last qualifier, a goal-less draw in Syria, but has his side second in Group A, behind Iran on goal difference after three of 10 matches.
CHINA 0, SYRIA 1
Mahmoud Al Mawas scored the only goal in the second half for Syria’s first win in Group A, in Xian.
China, meanwhile, remained winless.
UZBEKISTAN 0, IRAN 1
Iran overtook Uzbekistan and moved into first place in Group A.
Jalal Hosseini scored the only goal.
JAPAN 2, IRAQ 1
Hotaru Yamaguchi scored the winner in the fifth minute of injury time in Saitama.
Genki Haraguchi put Japan ahead in the first half but Saad Adbulameer equalized in the 60th.
“I can’t say that the match was a good one and can’t say that the team’s performance was excellent, but that was what I was looking for,” Japan coach Vahid Halilhodzic said.
UNITED ARAB EMIRATES 3, THAILAND 1
In Abu Dhabi, two goals from Ali Mabkhout gave the Emirates a second win in three Group B games.
Tana Chanabut pulled one back for Thailand but Ahmed Khalil sealed the host’s win in injury time.
SAUDI ARABIA 2, AUSTRALIA 2
Saudi Arabia leveled 11 minutes from the end of regulation but Australia stayed on top of Group B, ahead of the Saudis on goal difference.
Australia took until halftime to match an early Saudi goal, then Tomi Juric put the Aussies ahead in Jeddah in the 71st. But eight minutes later Nassir Al Shamrani made it 2-2.
