Raymond Swope Jr., 92, of Scottsburg, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2016, at Scott Memorial Hospital.

Born Jan. 20, 1924, in Lebanon, he was the son of Raymond A. and Naomi Smith Swope, both of whom preceded him in death.

Raymond graduated from Lebanon High School in 1941 and later earned his bachelor’s degree from Indiana University in Bloomington. He was the retired owner and operator of the old Raymond Swope Accounting Office in Scottsburg and a member of First Baptist Church in Scottsburg. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and was awarded a Purple Heart for his service.

Raymond was a charter member of Scott Memorial Hospital Board, a retired director with the Scottsburg Building & Loan Association, a former member of Scottsburg Lions Club, Seymour Elks, Scottsburg Lodge 572 Free & Accepted Masons and an avid IU sports fan. He was also instrumental in establishing Westwood Golf Course and was a member there since it opened.

Survivors include two sons, Gary (Terry) Swope and Brent Swope, all of Scottsburg; a daughter, Kathi (Jerry) Hackney of Seymour; a stepson, Brent (Beverly) Zollman of Louisville, Kentucky; a stepdaughter, Kim Combs of Saginaw, Michigan; a sister, Mary Jean Ottinger of Zionsville; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife and the mother of his children, Beverly C. Swope; his second wife, Sandra S. Swope; a brother, Moncil Swope; and a grandaughter, Leslie Renee Swope.

The funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Collins Funeral Home with burial in Scottsburg Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 2 p.m. until time of service Saturday.
