Makenna Sunbury, Seymour cross-country, freshman

Accomplishments this past week: Won the Batesville InvitationalĀ  and placed second at the Hoosier Hills Conference with a personal best at Bedford North Lawrence.

How were you able to perform to your fullest potential this past week?

“I rested more than I usually do, ate pasta the night before the race, researched who my competition would be and wore my lucky headband during the race. I also worked hard and ran smart during my workouts.”

What did you do well?

“I paced myself during the race. At Batesville, I pulled away after the first kilometer in the race and mentally pushed myself to the finish. At Bedford, I was patient and ran with the lead pack for the first mile. Then, I pulled ahead with my teammate, Ashton Chase, and pushed up the hills all the way to the finish.”

Do you do anything special to prepare?

I eat a carb-filled dinner and get to bed earlier than I usually do. I also plan out the race in my head the day before.
