Cleta Fern Jewell Alexander, 88, of Austin, passed away Sunday, Oct. 2, 2016, at Lake Point Village in Scottsburg.

Born March 31, 1928, in Beattyville, Kentucky, she was the daughter of Lee Jewell and Maggie Palmer Jewell, both of whom preceded her in death. In March 1946, she married Chester Alexander, who passed away Feb. 17, 1996.

Cleta was a retired cook for Scott County School District 1 in Austin and a member of Grace Covenant Church of God in Austin.

Survivors include daughters, Sherry Lynn (Roger) Hawkins and Robin Jill (Roger) Chasteen, both of Austin; sons, Kenneth Gale (Charlane) Alexander of Seymour, James David Alexander of Austin, Timothy Lee Alexander of North Vernon and Terry Allen (Carol) Alexander of Scottsburg; a brother, Hershell (Delores) Jewell of Scottsburg; grandchildren, Mary E. (Larry) Cundiff, John (Natalie Dussault) Alexander, Joseph Alexander, Julie (Michael) Miner, Ryan Hawkins, Shelley (Dale) West, Sara (Chad) LaMaster, Morgan (Rick Davis) Alexander, Lindsay Chasteen, Lauren (Ethan Purcell) Chasteen, Jeremy Alexander, Tyler Alexander and McKenzie Alexander; 19 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Benjamin Alan Alexander; brothers, Brown Jewell, Eugene Jewell, Kerney Jewell, Conley Jewell and James Jewell; and sisters, Nazzie Brandenburg, Nettie Begley and Marie Barns.

The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Buchanan Funeral Home in Austin, with Pastor Steve Gwaltney officiating.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. until time of service Thursday at the funeral home.

Burial will be at New Providence Cemetery in Austin.
