LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — An officer has fatally shot an armed 17-year-old boy after police say the teenager pointed a handgun at the officer after a family disturbance.

The Benton Police Department says the boy was reported to be in possession of a handgun when officers responded to the disturbance late Monday morning.

Police say the boy fled into a nearby wooded area and refused commands by the officer to put down the weapon. Police said the officer shot the teenager after the boy pointed the weapon at the officer. The teenager was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police did not release the name of the officer, who has been placed on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.

Benton is about 25 miles southwest of Little Rock.
