CHICAGO — Two of Illinois’ largest newspapers have split on their endorsements for U.S. Senate.
The Daily Herald in suburban Chicago is backing Republican U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk. The newspaper says the courage the first-term senator from Highland Park has shown in recovering from a 2012 stroke “is the same courage he exhibits as a public servant.”
The Daily Herald endorsement comes after the Chicago Tribune argued last week that Kirk can no longer effectively do the job due to his stroke and instead backed Democratic U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth. Kirk’s campaign described the endorsement as a “cheap shot.”
The Chicago Sun-Times editorial board on Sunday also endorsed Duckworth, saying the second-term congresswoman from Hoffman Estates “has the potential to be the effective senator Kirk has never been.”
