Hoosiers will have the chance to dispose of their expired, unused or unwanted prescription drugs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at North Vernon Fire Department, 2000 N. Madison Ave.

The free event is part of National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day and is sponsored by the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency and the Indiana Board of Pharmacy in partnership with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. Local partners involved besides the fire department are the Jennings County Health Department and Jennings County Sheriff’s Department.

Anyone may drop off prescription drugs or patches, but liquids and needles will not be accepted, according to a news release from the state’s Professional Licensing Agency. Law enforcement officials will be onsite to take possession of and dispose of the medications.

In 11 previous take-back events, the DEA and its partners have collected more than 6.4 million pounds or 3,200 tons of pills.
