A Crawford County man has been arrested in North Vernon on multiple drug charges.

Ricky Daugherty, 52, of Taswell was arrested on two felony charges and two misdemeanors, said Sgt. Andrew Richmond, North Vernon Police Department spokesman.

Daugherty faces charges of trafficking with an inmate, a level 5 felony; legend drug violation, a level 6 felony; possession of less than 30 grams of marijuana, a Class A misdemeanor; and possession of paraphernalia, a Class B misdemeanor, Richmond said.

About 7:49 p.m. Saturday, North Vernon police officer Kyle Hall saw Daugherty driving a vehicle with an expired license plate, Richmond said. During the traffic stop, Hall noticed an odor of marijuana coming from the car.

Daugherty told Hall he had a small amount of marijuana and Hall confiscated it and arrested Daugherty, Richmond said. Hall then located a larger amount of marijuana in Daugherty’s pocket, Richmond said.

While Daugherty was being booked into the Jennings County Jail, officers found that he had a small plastic wrapper with multiple prescription pills later identified as hydrocodone, oxycodone and hydromorphone, all prescription-only pain medications.

The trafficking with an inmate charge was added because the prescription pills weren’t discovered on Daugherty until after he had be taken to the jail, after Hall had given him a chance to disclose any other illegal property he might have on him, Richmond said.

Daugherty was held in lieu of $1,055 bond, jail officials said.
