Fundraising efforts for the American Cancer Society’s 2017 Relay for Life of Jackson County will officially kick off during an open house from 1 to 3 p.m. Dec. 3 at the Seymour American Legion Post 89 Annex, 402 W. Second St.

Participants may earn prizes as they complete their passports at The Polar Express themed event, which is open to the public.

Past, present and prospective teams are encouraged to attend. Team meetings are scheduled on the second Tuesday most months. The current schedule is Jan. 9, Feb. 13, March 13, April 10 and May 1 (T-shirt pickup night) at MainSource Bank, 1130 E. Tipton St.

The date and location of the six-hour 2017 Relay for Life of Jackson County is May 5 at Seymour Middle School.

The event theme is “Lights, Camera, Relay for a Cure!” and will include movie-themed team sites.

Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature event, dedicated to increasing awareness and raising funds to fight cancer. Teams of family, friends and co-workers take turns walking the track.

During the event, participants and visitors have a chance to celebrate the victory of area cancer survivors during the Survivors’ Lap, remember those who have lost their battle to the disease during the Luminaria Ceremony, and participate in the Fight Back Ceremony that gives everyone a chance to proclaim their way of taking action against the disease.

Volunteers are still needed to help plan the event in the following ways: Fund the Cure Lead, Survivors & Caregivers, and Logistics.
