A 75-year-old woman was flown to an Indianapolis hospital after she was trapped inside her vehicle following a head-on collision with a semitrailer Tuesday morning west of Seymour.

Rescue workers spent more than half an hour freeing Nancy S. Wilson of Seymour from the 2012 Chevrolet Equinox she was driving after it was involved in a wreck with a semitrailer driven by Richard A. Santel, 46, of Carlyle, Illinois, according to news release from Sgt. Stephen Wheeles with the Indiana State Police.

That wreck was reported at about 10 a.m. on State Road 258 near Bell Ford Drive.

After she was freed from her vehicle by Seymour and Hamilton Township, Wilson was flown from the scene by StatFlight to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment. The extent of her injuries and her condition was not available Tuesday, Wheeles said. Santel was not injured.

Wheeles said the initial investigation shows that Santel was driving a 2012 Freightliner box truck, owned by Rose Acre Farms, east on State Road 258 when truck crossed the center line and and hit Wilson’s vehicle, which she was driving west. After the impact, both vehicles wound up on the north side of the road. The driver’s side door of Wilson’s vehiclee had to be removed to free Wilson.

As required by law, Santel submitted to a drug and alcohol scene at a nearby medical facility, Wheeles said.

He said drugs and/or alcohol are not suspected to be factors in the wreck, which left State Road 258 closed until the wreck could be investigated and cleaned up.

Jackson County Emergency Medical Services personnel provided medical attention for Wilson at the scene. Officers with Seymour and Jackson County also assisted at the scene and towing services was provided by 31 Wrecker.
