Lions Club sponsoring Special Olympics tournament

Seymour Noon Lions Club is sponsoring its annual Jackson County Special Olympics Basketball Tournament on Jan. 7.

The tournament will be at Seymour Middle School, 920 N. O’Brien St., and will feature 17 area teams. Action begins at 9 a.m. and will continue through 5 p.m.

There will be a special skills competition for those who are unable to play on a team.

This is a time for the special athletes to have a good time and socialize with teams from around southern Indiana. Participation in this tournament qualifies teams for the state Special Olympics tournament.

The Lions Club and McDonald’s, Jay C Food Stores and Pepsi Cola Co. will donate food and drinks for the lunch, and the middle school athletics department will be operating the snack bar for family members, guests and visitors.

The public is invited to come and watch the tournament. There is no admission fee.

The Lions Club sponsored the first Jackson County Special Olympics Basketball Tournament on Jan. 15, 1983, in Seymour. The Columbus Go-Getters defeated the Jackson County Jets 38-28 in the championship contest of that eight-team tournament. Seymour Noon Lions Club members served as timekeepers and scorekeepers for that tournament.
