Centra Foundation is accepting applications for the 2017-18 Loretta M. Burd Scholarship program.

Eight $1,500 scholarships will be awarded to graduating high school seniors, and two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to adult or non-traditional students.

Awards may be used at two- or four-year colleges, universities or technical schools during the 2017-18 school year. Applicants must be a member of Centra Credit Union with accounts in good standing.

The scholarship program is named in honor of Loretta Burd, who retired from Centra Credit Union after 47 years of service, including 25 years as CEO.

Applications are reviewed on a regional basis, with winners selected based on academic achievement, school/community/work involvement and the content of a written essay.

Forms can be found at centrafoundation.org. The application deadline is Feb. 13.

Foundation President Lyn Morgan said the increase in the student awards from $1,000 to $1,500 is the second time in three years the foundation has been able to expand the scholarship program.

Previously, the foundation increased the number of scholarship awards from three to 10, she said.

Jacob Schult, a 2016 Trinity Lutheran High School graduate, was awarded a Loretta M. Burd Scholarship in May 2016. He currently is studying mechanical engineering at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

Centra Foundation is the charitable arm of Centra Credit Union and was formed to extend the credit union’s mission of People Helping People.
