The Brownstown Town Council has a new president.

During its first meeting of 2017 on Jan. 3, Sally Lawson was unanimously voted as president of the five-member council. Town officials said she’s the first woman to serve in that role.

Lawson has been with the council since October 2015, when she was sworn in as the Ward 5 representative after Dustin Steward resigned because he moved out of the ward.

Town council members also were assigned to commissions. They are Bethany Brewster, parks and recreation; Bill Sweeney, cemetery; Matt Smith, police department; Gregory Goshorn, street department; and Lawson, sewage utility.
