Voicemail was part of scam

A local man recently received a voicemail from someone saying they are from the county and he is past due on a payday loan, but it was a scam.

The voicemail said the person was with the check and arbitration department of the county. The message claimed that the local man was going to be served with papers between 5 and 6 p.m., and he needed to call 844-454-9159 by 4 p.m.

After looking up the number online, he decided to call Jackson County officials. They told him that is not a number they use.

They referred the man to the attorney general’s office, which directed him to call the Federal Trade Commission. The FTC told him this is a nationwide problem.

The man was advised to not call the number back.

If you receive a call from that number, call the FTC at 877-382-4357.
