Charles M. Gambrel, 94, of Crothersville passed away at 11:17 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2017, at Schneck Medical Center.



Born Jan. 16, 1923, in Greenfield, he was the son of Charles Earl and Mary Katherine Anderson Gambrel, both of whom preceded him in death. On Aug. 23, 1941, in Greenfield, he married Naomi Belle Stainbrook, and they were married for 73 years before her passing Dec. 14, 2014.

He attended Greenfield High School, was a retired ironworker and was a member of Local Union 22, and served in the United States Navy during World War II as a signalman. Charles was a charter member of Hickory Hills Golf Club in Brownstown, where he was an avid golfer.



Survivors include five children, Donald (Ruth Ann) Gambrel Sr. of Seymour, Dick (Edith) Gambrel of Versailles, Robert (Connie) Gambrel of New Palestine, Peggy (Steve) Hauer of Scottsburg and William (Dilcia) Gambrel of Dominican Republic; 14 grandchildren 29 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.



He also was preceded in death by four brothers, Max, Harold, Virgil and John Gambrel, and a granddaughter, Stephanie Gambrel.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Adams Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Crothersville with Pastor Terry Fordice officiating. Burial will be in Russell Chapel Cemetery immediately following the service.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of service Saturday.

Memorials may be given to Russell Chapel Cemetery.
