BLOOMINGTON

Seymour diver Devin Ramsey lives by the motto on his swimming shirt, “Beast Mode, On,” and that mentality is what helped him win the Bloomington North Diving Regional championship on Tuesday.

Ramsey’s score was 7.35 out of first place after the first five rounds, but he took a 13.75-point lead against Mooresville’s Ashton Johnson after the eighth round. Johnson pulled within 1.3 going into the last of 11 dives, but Ramsey had a solid final dive to finish in first place. His 432.60 score was nine points higher than Johnson’s.

Ramsey will move on to Saturday’s state meet at the Indiana University Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI.

“It feels pretty great,” Ramsey said.

Ramsey failed to make it out of the regional competition last year but said the IU summer diving camp helped him get ready for this season. Winning regional was a goal Ramsey had in mind all season, which is why he continued to work even after practice was over.

“He has worked diligently, and he has fantastic work ethics,” Seymour coach Tara Sutherland said. “He earned this. It wasn’t handed to him. I’m proud of him.

The diving prelims begin at 9 a.m. Saturday and will be followed by the semifinals. The top 16 divers will make their final three dives within the swimming finals, which begin at 1 p.m.
