Several Jennings County residents are hosting the third annual 5K/15K Walk, Ruck and Run to Honor the Sacrifice at 9 a.m. April 1 at the Jennings County Fairgrounds in North Vernon.

Money raised from the event will be donated to the Indiana National Guard Emergency Fund and the USO Camp Atterbury Center.

This year’s event will consist of a 5K walk, ruck march and run and a 15K walk, ruck march and run. Prizes will be awarded to individual placers in women’s, men’s and youth categories. Organizers have added a 15K team ruck march competition this year.

Registration is $20, and forms may be downloaded from the event website at ruckandrunjenningscounty.org or event Facebook page at facebook.com/honorthesacrifice. They also may be obtained by emailing [email protected].

Event organizers were inspired to take action to show support of local Indiana State Police Trooper Rick Hewitt upon his return from deployment in Afghanistan.

Hewitt suggested raising money for the Indiana National Guard Emergency Fund, which provides grants to families of deployed guardsmen in the event of an unexpected emergency at home. This fund can be accessed by any guardsman or family member across the state, so Jennings County residents, no matter which armory they are attached to, can utilize funds raised by this event.

The USO Camp Atterbury Center meets short-term needs of soldiers preparing to deploy, returning from deployment or training locally.
