A Seymour factory was evacuated for several hours after a bomb threat was made early Wednesday morning, police report.

At 1:22 a.m., the Seymour Police Department received a call from someone inside Valeo, an automotive lighting systems manufacturer at 1231 A Ave. East in Freeman Field Industrial Park, said Capt. Carl Lamb.

“The caller reported that a bomb was going to detonate at 4 a.m.,” he said.

Dispatchers received a second call a minute later indicating the threat was not a joke and a third call that police should be taking the threat more seriously, Lamb said.

Officers Mike Cooper, Devin Cornwell, Devlin McMindes and Jeremy Helmsing responded to Plant 1.

After all employees had been evacuated from the property, officers spent the next three hours searching the building, Lamb said.

Two sweeps of the property were conducted by police and Valeo management, he said.

“Officers searched the exterior, the parking lot, the staging area, pretty much the whole building. Nothing appeared out of the ordinary,” Lamb said. “By 4:15 a.m., they had the building cleared.”

Employees were allowed back into the building at 5:30 a.m.

It was estimated there were 480 to 500 employees working third shift at the time, Lamb said.

The caller had indicated the bomb was located near the west-end presses, he said.

No arrests have been made in the case, and anyone with information on who made the threat can call the Seymour Police Department at 812-522-1234. Calls may be made anonymously.
