Police: Pair rob grocery store armed with machetes

Seymour police continue to investigate the robbery Monday night of a supermarket near downtown.

Lt. John Watson said two people — a man and a woman — armed with machetes entered Supermercado Morales at 416 E. Tipton St.

Watson said only the woman spoke to the cashier demanding that he give her the money from the register. The cashier complied with that request.

“As far as we know, the male didn’t speak during their time in the store,” Watson said.

The pair fled the store on foot after being given $500 to $600, he said.

There were two customers in the store at the time of the robbery, but nobody was injured in the incident at 8:53 p.m. Monday, Watson said.

He said because the two were wearing ski masks, gloves and hoodies, police were unable to obtain any type of description of either person.

The cashier, however, told police he was fairly certain the woman was white because he was able to see some of her skin, Watson said.

Police continue to try to piece together the incident, talking with witnesses and checking video surveillance from the area, he said.

“We’re following up on leads,” Watson said.

Anyone with information about the incident may contact police at 812-522-1234.
