The nonprofit agency Legal Aid, which provides free legal services and lawyer referrals to low-income residents of Jackson and seven other counties in south central Indiana, is planning a series of monthly clinics.

The clinics will offer 10- to 15-minute consultations from 3 to 5 p.m. on the fourth Monday of each month at the Legal Aid Office in the United Way Building, 1531 13th St., Columbus. The first clinic will be Monday with others to follow May 22, June 26, Aug. 28, Sept. 25, Oct. 23, Nov. 27 and Dec. 18 (third week due to Christmas).

Consultations are provided on a first-come, first-serve basis. No advance registration is needed.

The agency is in the process of planning several clinics at local sites in Indiana’s Pro Bono District 1, which includes Brown, Bartholomew, Decatur, Jackson, Jennings, Johnson, Shelby and Rush counties.

The pro bono program will utilize local volunteer attorneys and offer free legal consultations to low-income individuals for the provision of legal advice and assistance in furtherance of equal access to justice with the community who might not otherwise be able to afford the counsel of an attorney.
