From being a star player at Seymour High School to being named Big Ten Coach of the Year, Teri Moren’s life has revolved around basketball.

On Wednesday, local women have an opportunity to hear her success story during the Jackson County Women’s Conference at Pewter Hall in Brownstown.

Moren, the women’s basketball head coach at Indiana University, is the keynote speaker for the event, which is conducted every other year.

Gerri Smith, membership services director for the Greater Seymour Chamber of Commerce, said a 14-member committee came together to discuss possible keynote speaker candidates.

They look for someone who would empower women.

Smith expects Moren to share stories of her Seymour roots and how she rose up the ranks in the basketball world.

“It will be exciting to hear how she has evolved to where she is now and what she had to do and what sacrifices she had to make to get to where she is,” Smith said.

Doors will open at 8 a.m., and breakfast will go until 8:40 a.m. Women also will be able to check out some of the 26 informational booths during that time.

Dr. Steven Windley with Schneck Integrative Medicine Center will speak about women’s health issues at 8:45 a.m., and B.loved owner Brandy Hampton will share her story at 9:45 a.m.

There will be a break until Alisa Kilgas Wright, chief executive officer of BioConvergence, speaks at 11:45 a.m.

Lunch will be served an hour later, and then Becky Schepman will lead everyone in some exercises and door prizes will be handed out before Moren takes to the stage from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Closing remarks and a grand prize drawing, provided by Tiemeier’s Jewelry, will wrap up the event by 3 p.m.

All of this year’s speakers have Jackson County connections.

“We’ve been lucky to get some good speakers that are actually from this area,” Smith said.

“Usually, they all have a personal story that really shows how they maybe started at the bottom and worked their way up,” she said. “They share their personal stories and how they achieved their goals through their hard work and perseverance. It’s really touching some of the stories we hear how they have worked their way up the ladder, so to speak.”

During her basketball career at Seymour High School, Moren led the Owls to four sectional titles, two regional championships, a semistate win and a 1987 state finals appearance. She was named an Indiana All-Star as a senior.

She then became a four-year letterwinner and two-year starter at Purdue University. She was a part of three NCAA Tournament teams and Purdue’s first Big Ten championship team.

After graduating in 1992 with a bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation, Moren began her coaching career as an assistant coach at Butler University. In her six years there, the Bulldogs had three 20-win seasons.

Following a couple of years as an assistant coach at Northwestern University, Moren took on her first head-coaching role at the University of Indianapolis in 2000. She remained there for seven seasons.

Moren then was the associate head coach at Georgia Tech for three years. During that time, the Yellow Jackets made an NCAA Tournament appearance and won 22 or more games each season.

She returned to the Hoosier State in 2010 to lead the Indiana State University women’s basketball team for four seasons until taking on her current role in 2014.

The Hoosiers were 23-11 in 2016-17, setting a school record for the most wins in a single season.

Moren was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 2014 and also was a member of the 2012 Silver Anniversary Team.
