If you’re a kid who likes to fish or know a kid who might, Hoosier National Forest officials invite you to the Kids Fishing Derby and Outdoor Day on May 13 at Lake Tarzian at Maumee Scout Reservation.

The derby is a free event for families at the camp, north of Norman off County Road 925W in northwestern Jackson County.

The goal is to get kids hooked on fishing, according to a news release from Teena Ligman, a public affairs specialist with the Hoosier National Forest.

Fishing poles, bait and prizes will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing gear.

Other events include a casting contest, water safety education, bait and fish identification, knot tying and fishing techniques.

Participants will have the chance to shoot carp targets in the water with a bow and arrow, and there are fishing-related games for small children, event coordinator Bryan King said.

Awards will be given for the most fish caught and the biggest fish caught for each age group.

Participants should be 15-years-old or younger and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The event is limited to the first 75 kids to register.

Registration is open at the U.S. Forest Service Bedford Office or by calling 812-275-5987.
