Police responding to a suspicious vehicle complaint Sunday morning in the Columbus area arrested a Jackson County man for auto theft.

Justin Kleinpeter, 30, of the 700 block of South Vine Street in Seymour was found asleep inside the vehicle parked on Gore Street, according to a news release from the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department. That incident was reported to police at 12:42 a.m. Sunday.

The hood of the vehicle was open, making it appear there was a mechanical problem, according to a report from Sgt. Gary Knoef and Officer Jon Lanning.

An investigation showed the vehicle had been stolen the Seymour area, and the license plate on it had been taken Saturday from a vehicle in a parking lot at Columbus East High School.

Kleinpeter, who also faces a charge of receiving stolen property, was booked into the Bartholomew County Jail, but has since been released.
