Fire destroys business office

An early morning fire Sunday that destroyed the office of a manufactured home sales business on the far east side of Seymour is under investigation.

Police and firefighters responded to a call of a structure fire at Baird Homes, 208 S. Commerce Drive, around 4:30 a.m. The cause of the fire was unknown as of Sunday afternoon, but Seymour Fire Chief Brad Lucas said it “looks suspicious.”

“We’re looking into it,” he said. “We had two investigators from the state fire marshal’s office down this morning.”

Lucas estimated around $250,000 to the main office building and a workshop and storage area behind it, where he thinks the fire started.

“That area was totally burnt up,” he said. “The office won’t be salvageable, so it was a total loss, too.”

A couple of the manufactured homes that were sitting near the office had some of the siding damaged from the heat of the flames, he added.

The business owners were not on the property, but Lucas said he suspects someone was there and started the fire.

“But we don’t know who,” he said.

The fire was called in by a passerby and it took a little more than two hours for firefighters to extinguish the blaze.

“We had four trucks out there and it was almost 7 a.m. before we had it out,” Lucas said.

No one was injured as a result of the fire.

Anyone who was driving by or was in the area of Baird Homes in the early morning hours Sunday and saw someone or something suspicious should call the police department at 812-522-1234 or the fire department at 812-522-2598.
