J. Clarence “Clem” Smith, 82, of Sellersburg, passed away during the early morning hours of Tuesday, May 9, 2017, at his home.

Born Nov. 3, 1934, in Springfield, Kentucky, he was the son of Samuel and Mary Louise Smith, both of whom preceded him in death.

He retired from Farm Credit Bank, where he worked as a bank examiner. He had a very successful career in finance, having worked for multiple financial institutions, including Wayne County Bank of Wayne County Tennessee, and St. Louis Banks of St. Louis, Missouri. He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Charlestown. In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking and tracking the stock market, but his greatest passion was work.

Survivors include his loving wife, Linda Smith of Sellersburg; his son, state District 45 Sen. Jim C. (Brenda) Smith of Charlestown; his daughter, Kimberly (Kevin) Chesser of Crestwood, Kentucky; his brother, John F. Smith of Lexington, Kentucky; two grandchildren, Alixandria Chesser and Kevin Chesser Jr.; several nieces and nephews; and his faithful companion, Pebbles, the miniature Poodle.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Samuel, William and Benard Smith, and his sister, Mary Josephine Mudd.

A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Michael Catholic Church in Charlestown. Interment will be at Queen of Heaven Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Garr Funeral Home in Sellersburg.
