James R. “Skipper” Childress Jr., 60, of North Vernon passed away at 5:17 p.m. Wednesday, May 10, 2017, at Franciscan Health Indianapolis.

Born May 6, 1957, in Mobile, Alabama, he was the son of James R. and Sarah A. Cassidy Childress, both of whom preceded him in death. On Aug. 24, 2002, he married Amanda G. Eisenmenger, who survives.

Skipper was a retired commercial fisherman and musician.

Besides his wife, survivors include his children, James R. Childress III, John H. Childress, Stephanie Childress, Samantha Holley, Denise Young, Colleen Townson, Corrie Townson and Casey Townson; sisters, Cheryl (Dave) Duncan, Tarris Brooks, Patsy Byers, Alice Castro and Clara (Rem) McCafferty; 18 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Carol Turley.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. today at Victory Missionary Baptist Church in Seymour conducted by Voss & Sons Funeral Service with Pastor Kenny Roberson officiating.

Following the service, friends and family may gather in the fellowship hall at the church.
