Seymour boys tie for 6th in conference

Madison

Seymour boys track and field coach Randy Fife said the Hoosier Hills Conference is traditionally strong, and it showed in Thursday’s conference meet at Madison.

Floyd Central won the meet with 116 points, only one point ahead of Jeffersonville. The top four teams were separated by just seven points, with New Albany edging Columbus East 110-109 for third.

The Owls tied with Bedford North Lawrence for sixth with 54.

“This year, I think (the conference) is even stronger,” Fife said. “We have some very good teams, very good individuals, so we didn’t get any first places tonight, no conference champions, but we competed well.”

Seymour ended the day with five third-place finishes, one fourth place and a total of 14 finishes in the top eight.

Jake Vance and Seth Ragon led the team in the field events, placing third in the pole vault and high jump, respectively. Vance vaulted 12 feet, 6 inches, and Ragon jumped 6-2.

Vance also ran the leadoff leg for the 4×100-meter relay team — joining Gavin Blanton, Jackson Morris and Ethan Ortman — that placed third in 44.71 seconds.

The Owls’ 4×400 relay team of Conner Lane, Blanton, Bradan Thomasma and Luke Champ also placed third, finishing in 3:37.30, and Hunter Bauserman took third in the 1,600-meter run in 4:35.3.

Seymour’s 4×800 relay team of Trent Hohenstreiter, Alex Lovins, Luke Plummer and Thomasma placed fourth in 8:29.99.

“We outperformed our seeds in several places,” Fife said. “That’s always a positive when you do better than expected. The kids worked hard, and we’re proud of them.”
