Correction – May 15

In a front-page story in Friday’s Tribune about the dismissal of a welfare fraud charge against former Jackson County Prosecutor Stephen Pierson, it was incorrectly reported that Jackson Circuit Judge Richard W. Poynter had approved the motion to dismiss the charge. The state’s motion to dismiss the charge was signed by special prosecuting attorney James F. Gallagher, who wrote in the motion that further prosecution of the case was not warranted because of a disability Pierson was diagnosed with in February of 2015. Pierson’s jury trial had been set for 9 a.m. May 23 but was canceled after the charge was dismissed Friday by Special Judge Stephen Heimann.
