MONTPELIER, Vt. — Thousands of Vermont residents still haven’t received their tax refunds.
State tax officials tell WCAX-TV (http://bit.ly/2qwEtE4 ) that 39,000 people are waiting for their refunds.
The average return time falls around 23 days for people who file electronically and a month for paper returns. Some residents have waited up to 12 weeks.
Tax officials say they are trying to prevent fraud which will take longer. State Tax Commissioner Kaj Samsom says data and identity verification issues are slowing the process down.
Samsom says the department has sent out close to 9,000 letters addressing the backup.
However, some beleaguered taxpayers say they haven’t received anything.
The tax department maintains that electronic filing will speed the process up. Officials say 10 percent of taxpayers still use mail.
