Leah Israel Bowling, 59, of North Vernon passed away Wednesday, May 17, 2017, at her home.
Born Sept. 29, 1957, in Maryland, she was the daughter of Josiah and Deborah Azareel Israel. She married Charles “Bill” Bowling on Oct. 28, 1978, at the AME Church in Seymour and he survives.
Leah was home-schooled. She attended Colorado Technical University, receiving her associate and bachelor degrees in criminal justice. She later earned a master’s degree in music.
She was a member of the Democratic Party Women’s Group, where she was a former president and most recently vice president, Democratic Party Central Committee and Butlerville Mennonite Church. She was also a Democratic Precinct Committee member for Campbell Township and an advocate for the mentally handicapped. She worked at Indiana Mentor for 10 years and the T/A truck stop in Seymour.
Her hobbies included being outdoors, fishing, camping and playing the guitar.
She was also on two Nick Clooney Shows when she was 12.
Survivors include her husband, Charles of North Vernon; one son, Michael Bowling of Butlerville; three grandchildren, Elijah Bowling of North Carolina, Jaime Bowling and Laila Arthur, both of Butlerville.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Joseph and James Bowling.
The funeral service for Mrs. Bowling will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Butlerville Mennonite Church with the Rev. Dale Boyd officiating.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the church.
