Cougars can’t overcome rough start

The first regional appearance for Trinity Lutheran’s boys golf program didn’t get off to a great start, but by the end of the day, head coach Greg Personett was pleased with how his two seniors acquitted themselves.

Drew Royalty and Chad Stuckwisch both struggled on the front side at Champions Pointe on Thursday morning, making the turn at 48 and 51, respectively. Personett said the two had run into some difficulties with bunkers midway through their first nine.

After making the turn, however, their fortunes turned around somewhat. Royalty shot a 42 to finish with a total of 90, while Stuckwisch wound up at 95 after carding a 44 on his second nine.

“You know how nerves can be, but they calmed down and played pretty good,” Personett said. “They came back and played a little bit better on the back side, struck the ball much better.”

Though both of the school’s first regional participants are graduating, Personett said he believes their achievement will help build momentum for the program as a whole.

“I’ve got a couple of younger players who are really working hard this summer,” he said. “I think this is good motivation for them.”
