WASHINGTON — A boy found floating facedown in a children’s pool at a home day care center in Washington has died.

Local news outlets report the child, who would have turned 2 years old this month, died Tuesday at Children’s National Medical Center. Authorities responded to Diane’s Child Care in Washington earlier that day. Police said that an initial investigation revealed the toddler fell into the pool, but did not release further details.

D.C. Office of the State Superintendent of Education spokesman Patience Peabody says the facility’s license is up to date. The rowhouse is owned by Diane E. Gallmon, who runs the day care.

The Metropolitan Police Department and the Child and Family Services Agency are investigating. Police do not believe, at this point, that the day care provider was negligent.
