PITTSFIELD, N.H. — A New Hampshire chief of police says he knows who is responsible for hanging a homemade Islamic State group flag at the town’s dam.

Pittsfield Police Chief Jeffrey Cain says they are treating the matter very seriously, and say they are confident they know the man responsible. He tells WMUR-TV (http://bit.ly/2rp0dDH ) that there is no immediate threat to the community.

Investigators are trying to determine if a crime was actually committed.

State Representative Michael Brewster, who represents Pittsfield as a Republican, isn’t sure — saying “Freedom of speech, I guess. I don’t know.” Brewster says he wasn’t aware the flag was made to represent the Islamic State group.

Residents of the town responded to the act by hanging American flags around the dam.
