Fifteen former Seymour High School athletes and coaches have been selected for the inaugural induction into the SHS Athletic Hall of Fame.

The group consists of Mickey Beck, Joe Goodman, Bode Hill, Baron Hill, Bud Surface, Rick Mousa, Larry Shade, Donna Sullivan, Teri Moren, John Britton, Walt Wintin, John Judd, Danny Thomas, Barney Scott and Julie VonDielingen Shelton.

A committee chose the inductees after a public nomination period that began last August. Nomination forms were made available online and at Seymour athletic events.

In order to be eligible for the hall of fame, an athlete or team must have completed high school at least 20 years ago. A coach or contributor must have at least 10 years of service to Seymour High School.

Athletics director Kirk Manns said 26 nominations were submitted.

Several of those chosen for induction already have hall of fame status.

Goodman, Seymour’s most winningest football coach is a member of the Indiana Football Hall of Fame; Baron Hill, Seymour’s leading scorer in basketball is in the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame along with Scott, for whom Seymour’s main gymnasium is named, Sullivan, Moren, who is the head coach for Indiana University’s women’s basketball team and Shelton, who is an assistant women’s basketball coach at Butler University.

“Impressive,” Manns said of the nominees’ accomplishments while at Seymour High School and for many, their continued involvement in the Seymour community and in athletics across the state.

An induction ceremony will take place on Dec. 16, before the boys’ varsity basketball game against Jennings County. A plaque featuring all of the inductees will be displayed in the main gymnasium.

The idea to start an athletic hall of fame was introduced in November 2014 by former athletic director Brandon Harpe, who now is an assistant superintendent for Seymour Community School Corp.

“It was put into motion by Mr. Harpe and assistant athletic director Dave Urbanski,” Manns said. “Those two deserve all of the credit.”
