Annual Cars and Guitars show returns to Seymour

Cars and Guitars will rock ’n roll into downtown Seymour this Saturday.

The annual car show and concert has become one of the city’s more popular events, attracting around 300 vehicles of all makes and models and the people who love them.

From classic and vintage to muscle and exotic cars, trucks and motorcycles, there’s something for everyone, said Gary Colglazier, who has been involved with the event since its inception.

The show will end with a concert by the Indianapolis band The Retros, performing hits of the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s. The concert will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Those attending the concert are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.

There is no cost for the public to attend the car show or concert.

Registration for the car show begins at noon on West Second Street in front of the Seymour Library. Entry is $20 per vehicle. Preregistered parking begins at 2 p.m. Dash plaques are available to the first 250 vehicles.

Cars and Guitars is a little different from most car shows because there are no awards given out, only door prizes.

All prizes are valued at $100 or more, including a set of rims from Big O Tires of Seymour and Prairie Farms milk for a year. There also will be a silent auction of gift baskets and other merchandise donated from local businesses and a 50/50 raffle.

But the best part of Cars and Guitars is the money raised is donated to the Seymour Parks and Recreation Department to purchase special playground equipment for physically challenged children.

Since the event started in the summer of 2004, around $76,000 worth of playground equipment has been installed at Shields, Gaiser and Kessler parks.

Cars and Guitars was started by a group of car enthusiasts, led by Dan Colglazier, Gary Colglazier, Denny Oakes and Mark King, who got together and decided Seymour needed another event to attract large crowds of people downtown.

The event has continued to be popular because so many people have an interest in cars and helping out kids, organizers said.

Entries come from as far away as Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan and Illinois.

A big factor that affects attendance is weather, but organizers are keeping their fingers crossed that it won’t rain.

In the event of rain, the concert will be in the Seymour High School gymnasium.
