PHOENIX — A Phoenix man who drowned in the Salt River on the 4th of July has been identified.
Maricopa County Sheriff’s Lake Patrol Detectives say 43-year-old Nicasio Gonzalez Lopez waded into the water on the Lower Salt River at Blue Point Bridge to remove a piece of floating trash around 2 p.m. Tuesday.
Family members say Lopez visited the river several times a year and would pick up trash left in the area by tubers as soon as he arrived.
They say Lopez didn’t know how to swim and the current forced him into deep water and he didn’t surface after being submerged.
Around 2:45 p.m., Lopez was located downstream. Authorities say CPR couldn’t revive him.
Sheriff’s officials say alcohol or drugs don’t appear to be factors in the accidental drowning.
