LAS CRUCES, N.M. — A Las Cruces man is jailed without bond after allegedly assaulting his 75-year-old grandmother and stealing $130 from her.

Las Cruces police say 23-year-old Antonio Esparza is being held on suspicion of felony counts of robbery and false imprisonment plus misdemeanor counts of battery against a household member and interference with communications.

They say Esparza allegedly has a drug problem and went to his grandmother’s home seeking money Thursday morning.

Police say Esparza allegedly threw his grandmother on a bed and held her down as he tried to find cash she was carrying.

Esparza reportedly took away her cellphone when she tried to call for help before he stole the money.

He was arrested outside his grandmother’s home and she wasn’t seriously injured.

It’s unclear if Esparza has a lawyer.
