BETHEL, Alaska — A 5-year-old boy riding a bike in Bethel has died of injuries suffered when he was struck by a sport utility vehicle.

The Bethel Police Department in a release says Preston Payne was pronounced dead at Yukon Kuskokwim Health Center.

The incident was first reported by Anchorage television station KTUU.

Bethel police just after 4 p.m. Saturday took a call of the crash on Atsaq Street.

Emergency medical technicians from the Bethel Fire Department attempted to revive the boy as they transported him to the hospital.

Police say the driver of the SUV, Richard Engebreth, was driving on the street when two children on bikes entered the roadway. Preston was the second child into the road.

An investigation continues and an autopsy has been ordered.
