COLUMBUS, Ind. — Someone vandalized a rural southern Indiana church over the weekend and tried to set it on fire in what the pastor calls an instance of “pure meanness.”

A maintenance worker at Ohio Chapel United Methodist Church near Columbus spotted the damage and called police Saturday afternoon. The (Columbus) Republic reports ( ) several windows were broken around the church and fires were set in the sanctuary and basement but didn’t spread.

Pastor Lonny Goen says the 20-member congregation is upset about the damage and that it isn’t justified. Goen says other churches have offered to host the congregation’s services.

Bartholomew County Sheriff Matt Myers says investigators are looking at possible links to damage at a nearby church and another in neighboring Brown County.
